By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton is calling on the Government of Belize to address the national blood bank crisis.
“Belize’s public healthcare system is in shambles, and what is happening at the National Blood Bank has now become a national emergency.
We are reliably informed that key systems at the National Blood Bank are not operational, and that the public is being told it has to be fixed. In the meantime, emergency cases and invasive procedures are being delayed until families can scramble to find blood donors on their own. This is not healthcare, this is abandonment,” Panton explained.
Panton says that public hospitals and clinics continue to struggle daily for basic supplies to treat patients who cannot afford private care.
“Last year, it has been disclosed that GoB procured some $80 million in pharmaceuticals and supplies. Belizeans have a right to ask: If that is true, why are our public facilities still unable to deliver basic, lifesaving care? Why are families being forced to do what our national health system is obligated to provide,” Panton added.
Panton says that Belizeans deserve a public healthcare system that works: one that protects life, not one that leaves families to fend for themselves in moments of crisis.
“We cannot continue to sit back and say nothing. We cannot continue to watch in silence while families suffer and lives are put at risk.The health of our nation is the wealth of our nation. Stay Awake Belize. Enough is enough. It is time for us to mobilize,” Panton said.
