Leader of Opposition calls on all Belizeans to speak out and strengthen systems of protection

By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton is calling on all Belizeans to speak out and urge the strengthening of systems of protection.

Panton says that “ images of a child being beaten with a bat and punched in the head by someone who should have been his protector is more than my heart can bear. The image of a mother trying to shield her child while enduring a brutal attack by her partner strikes at my very core.

For far too long, our women and children have suffered in silence. They have been the punching bags of partners who abuse, control, and terrorize behind closed doors while we, as a society, look on, sometimes knowingly, sometimes turning away. We cannot normalize this, excuse this behavior, or seek to erase it by requesting that charges be dropped.”

The Leader of the Opposition says that every child and woman deserves dignity.

Panton further called on all “leaders, families, neighbors, families, law enforcement, and community organizations to stand up and speak out. If you see something, say something. If you know something, act.

We MUST strengthen our systems of protection. We MUST ensure that laws are enforced. We MUST provide safe spaces, support services, and real consequences for those who commit these heinous acts.”

Panton urges everyone to work collectively to protect our children and all those who are victims of any form of violence and gender abuse.
