By Aaron Humes: Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods has announced that from 2026, meetings of the House of Representatives and Senate will be on a calendar.

Following next Tuesday’s meeting of the Senate, the usual holiday recess takes place from December 17 to January 27. There will be a joint sitting of the National Assembly on the reopening of the National Assembly Building on January 30, followed by the first regular meeting on February 6 and, pending recesses and public and bank holidays, meetings every first Friday of the month – with the Senate usually meeting the following week.

The Speaker said this will help improve work-life balance for members and allow for better planning of Committee meetings and the work of the Executive and Legislature generally.

The House typically takes three recesses through the year, at Easter, during July, August, and September, and before Christmas and New Year’s.

The members of the Government are all wearing orange attire in recognition of the recent 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which ended on Wednesday. Minister of Human Development Thea Garcia-Ramirez said it is a unified response in support of survivors and to remind of a “zero tolerance” approach to the issue.
