By Horace Palacio: A land distribution fair in Burrell Boom Village has sparked controversy after reports surfaced that access to land was being offered only to registered voters of the village. The event, held last Friday night, was promoted by PUP candidate Marconi Leal Jr., who urged first-time voters to come out and apply.
Critics argue that tying land distribution to voter registration is discriminatory and unfair, as land access should be a right for all Belizeans, not just registered voters. Adding to the debate, a $50 application fee was also required, raising concerns about accessibility.
Prime Minister John Briceño addressed the issue on Monday, defending the event but conceding that the use of the term “registered voters” was ill-advised. He explained that politicians frequently assist communities with access to essential services like land and clinics, clarifying that the intention was to prioritize people living in the area.
Despite his explanation, some PUP supporters admitted that this is not the first time such an event has been structured this way, raising further questions about whether political favoritism plays a role in land distribution. The issue remains a hot topic as Belize heads into the upcoming March 12 general elections.
