By Aaron Humes: 22-year-old James Alexander Halliday, a warehouse assistant and a resident of New Site area, Ladyville, Belize District, has been charged with theft over a failed social media sale.
Halliday appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate where he was read a single charge of theft. Allegations are that on April 12 in Belize City he dishonestly appropriated $100 from Khalil Hernandez with intent to permanently deprive him of such property. Halliday pleaded not guilty to the charge and since there was no objection to bail, the sitting Senior Magistrate granted bail to Halliday of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount which he met. He returns to court on September 27.
According to Hernandez, on April 10, he was scrolling on Facebook Belize Marketplace and messaged a Facebook profile in the name “Tyler Usher” inquiring about an iPhone 11 Pro Max he had posted for sale for $550 and also messaged “Pjay King” about an iPhone XS he posted for $350.
The following day, he (Hernandez) began to have a conversation with “Tyler Usher” and sent him bank information to deposit the $550 which he did. The next day, April 12, “Tyler Usher” messaged Hernandez saying that he could not send the phone and refunded him $450 with a balance of $100 which has still not been returned up to the date of his report.
On April 13, Hernandez messaged “Pjay King” asking him if the iPhone XS was still on sale and he said yes. “Pjay King” sent his bank information and the transaction was completed on April 15. According to Hernandez, soon after he made the payment, “Pjay King” started making excuses and up to this time Hernandez has not received the phone or money back.
