By Breaking Belize News Staff: Gabriel Mai, a Ladyville resident accused of beating his wife during a domestic dispute, has been granted his freedom just in time for the holidays. After nearly two months on remand for showing up to court drunk and having his bail revoked, Mai appeared before a Senior Magistrate on Friday morning and changed his initial plea from not guilty to guilty for the offense of grievous harm.
In court, Mai expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to the court and asking for leniency. He acknowledged the consequences of his behavior and the delays it caused in the legal process. As a result of his guilty plea, the Senior Magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence, starting with a fine of $3,000. However, Mai received a $1,000 reduction for his early guilty plea and mitigating factors, such as this being his first offense. His final sentence was a $2,000 fine, along with a $5.00 court cost, to be paid by March 28, 2025. Failure to pay will result in 11 months of imprisonment.
Mai, 34, had been charged with grievous harm following an incident at the family home on Marage Road, Ladyville, on January 10, 2024. However, his case took a turn on October 30, 2024, when he appeared drunk in court, leading to his remand for disrespecting the court.
Now, after his guilty plea and sentencing, Mai is back home with his family for the Christmas holidays.
