By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Ladyville man with a prior theft conviction is facing legal consequences once again after admitting to stealing a cellphone and cash from a court employee. Derrick Garbutt, 46, a self-employed construction worker from Mitchelle Estate, appeared unrepresented in Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was charged with theft.
Garbutt confessed to stealing a Samsung Galaxy phone worth $510 and $300 in cash from a woman while she was asleep on a bench on Pigeon Street, Ladyville, on September 10, 2024. Despite pleading for mercy, Garbutt was reminded by the Senior Magistrate that this was not his first offense. However, he was spared a custodial sentence and fined $600, plus court costs, which he must pay by November 22, 2024, or face three months in prison.
Additionally, Garbutt was ordered to compensate the woman $810 by December 6, 2024, or risk further legal action. The incident occurred after the woman, a court secretary, fell asleep with a friend after attending a party. Video footage from a nearby camera later identified Garbutt as the thief.
