By Aaron Humes: Police are seeking one man who did not show up to the High Court for his alleged rape case from 2022, when he was accused of raping a 17-year-old student after a night out at Eruption Bar & Night Club.

The case of Michael Llewellyn Flowers, 27, a resident of the Ladyville area, Belize District, was called up on Wednesday before Justice Derrick Sylvester, who issued a bench warrant at the request of the Crown to apprehend Flowers.

On the morning of Saturday, October 22, 2022, the minor was found clothed only in her underwear in a vehicle along the Philip Goldson Highway. She had attended a wake on the Friday night and ended up partying with friends at the Eruption Night Club. Police met her crying hysterically and alleging that she had been raped and robbed of her personal items, but she could not recall how she arrived at the location. She was last conscious while at the nightclub.

Flowers is tied to the case by an interaction with an area resident that was captured on home surveillance. He was arrested and charged after a medical examination confirmed sexual intercourse. He told police in a caution statement that he had allegedly had intercourse with the minor while she was still heavily intoxicated.

Flowers was committed to trial in October of 2023. In a separate matter the owners of the bar, which has since been renamed, Mirna Estela Portillo, 44, and her common-law husband, Hector Choj, 51, were jointly charged with admitting a person under 18 years of age into their nightclub. The two club owners are out on bail of $1,000 each.
