By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man once counted among the injured has found himself facing serious charges in connection with a deadly road traffic accident that occurred four months ago on the Philip Goldson Highway.
Twenty-eight-year-old Ector Soler, a Belizean maintenance worker of Airport Plaza and resident of 8.5 Miles Philip Goldson Highway, Ladyville, appeared on Friday before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6, unrepresented. He was arraigned on three indictable traffic offenses: manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention.
The charges stem from a fatal collision on Sunday, May 25, 2025, between Miles 9 and 10 on the Philip Goldson Highway, which claimed the life of 40-year-old Celia Josefina Carballo Pleitez De Lazaro, a Guatemalan national and common-law wife of Francisco Cortez.
Police investigations revealed that around 8:00 p.m. that night, Cortez, 24, a Belizean salesman of Ladyville, was driving his green Lifan LF 125-7 motorcycle with Celia riding pillion. As they traveled north to south and approached the intersection with Marage Road, Cortez reportedly indicated and slowed to turn left when Soler, driving a red Ducati Monster motorcycle, collided into the rear of their cycle.
The impact flung all three to the pavement. Cortez sustained body injuries, while Celia was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Soler was also injured in the crash.
Following months of investigation, including scene processing and medical examinations, the file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed that Soler be formally charged.
Celia and her husband had reportedly been returning home to Baltimore Road, Ladyville, after stopping to purchase food at a nearby restaurant when tragedy struck.
Soler saw no objection to bail and was granted bail in the sum of $7,000 plus one surety of the same or two sureties of $3,500 each, which he met around 12 noon. His next court date is set for November 21, 2025.
