By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 19-year-old Ladyville resident spent his first night on remand at the Belize Central Prison on Friday after he was arraigned for wounding in connection with a fight that reportedly involved a bottle.
Donovan Daniel Garcia, 19, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in Court #3, where he was read a single charge of wounding.
Police allege that on March 1, 2026, at the football field on Seagull Street in Ladyville, Garcia intentionally and unlawfully caused a wound to an 18-year-old man during an altercation.
Garcia pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court granted him bail in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount. As part of the bail conditions, Garcia was ordered not to interfere with the virtual complainant or any members of his family, nor with any prosecution witnesses. He was also ordered to stay at least 100 feet away from Vasquez.
However, Garcia was unable to post bail at the time of the hearing and was therefore remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can meet the bail requirements.
His next court date is set for May 5, 2026.
According to police reports, the complainant told authorities that he was at the football field when he saw Garcia approaching from behind a vehicle holding a bottle.
The man said he attempted to avoid Garcia, but Garcia allegedly began swinging the bottle at him several times. Although he managed to dodge the blows, the complainant reported that he eventually punched Garcia in the face in self-defense.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical struggle, during which the complainant said Garcia fell to the ground before the fight continued. The man told police that he sustained injuries to his right foot during the altercation.
After the incident, the complainant said he ran home and informed his sister, who then contacted the police.
