By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Laddie Foundation is gearing up to host its first-ever Five-A-Side Football Tournament, a community tournament set to take place from April 14 to April 23, 2025, at Hillview Park in Santa Elena, Cayo.
This tournament aims to go beyond football—it’s about empowering young athletes, fostering community bonds, and celebrating the passion for the game. Open to multiple age categories—U11 Mixed, U13 Boys, U15 Boys, U17 Girls, and U17 Boys—the tournament ensures inclusivity and encourages participation from all corners of the community.
With awards for the Most Valuable Player, Best Goalkeeper, and Top Scorer, along with trophies and medals, there’s plenty to play for.
Players and teams interested in participating are encouraged to register early by calling 630-4696. The clock is ticking, so gather your squad and prepare for a showdown. Mark your calendars and come support the players. It’s more than just football – it’s about building a stronger, united community through the beautiful game.
Laddie Gillett, a Cayo youth, was allegedly shot by Police Officer Kareem Martinez on the night of July 14, 2021, in Рlасеnсіа, Ѕtаnn Сrееk Dіѕtrісt. Маrtіnеz was rеѕроndіng tо rероrtѕ оf ѕuѕрісіоuѕ асtіvіtу оn the bеасh. Маrtіnеz was сhаrgеd wіth mаnѕlаughtеr. At the time, the Police Dераrtmеnt асknоwlеdgеd that the fоrсе PC Martinez uѕеd wasn’t јuѕtіfіаblе.
Laddie’s death caused general consternation across Belize and was unanimously condemned.
