By Breaking Belize News Staff: A domestic dispute over a cellphone escalated into a violent confrontation early Thursday morning, landing 26-year-old construction worker Christopher Witzil before the court on six criminal charges—five counts of aggravated assault on police officers and one count of resisting lawful arrest.
Witzil, an employee of Golden Bay and a resident of Linda Vista Street in Belize City, appeared unrepresented in Court #6 on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. When he attempted to explain his version of events, the Magistrate informed him that no explanation was necessary after entering a not-guilty plea.
The charges stem from a call made by his girlfriend, who visited the Mahogany Street Police Station around 4:30 a.m. on November 20 seeking assistance to retrieve her cellphone from Witzil and have him removed from her home. The woman reportedly told officers she did not want any court action taken against him—only the return of her phone.
According to police, when officers escorted the woman to her home, they found Witzil lying on the bed. After the woman located her phone in a pair of his trousers, Witzil allegedly became aggressive. An officer intervened, and police say Witzil responded by swinging at his head. Officers further allege that during the struggle to restrain him, Witzil kicked another officer in the chest, legs, and feet. Additional officers responded, and during the escort into the station, Witzil allegedly head-butted another cop and punched yet another one.
Despite no objection to bail, the prosecutor requested conditions. The Magistrate granted Witzil bail of $4,000 with one surety and ordered him to report weekly to Queen Street Police Station beginning Friday, November 28. However, he was unable to meet bail today and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
Witzil also remains indebted to the court for $1,600 from a 2020 conviction for being a member of a gang. Authorities say he will reappear in court at a later date to answer to the six new charges.
