By Breaking Belize News Staff: Dangriga Mayor Robert Mariano, in a peculiar livestream from his office on Saturday afternoon, met with 4 women who allege they were fired from the local Western Dairies branch because they are Garifuna. Mariano pledged to seek clarity from the manager of Western Dairies amid the allegations.
The first public allegations against the company came via a livestream from DYFA Garifuna Radio 91.7FM’s Facebook page on Saturday afternoon, in which the host streamed from inside the Western Dairies restaurant. He made numerous allegations and produced one of the termination letters given to one of four Garinagu women terminated from the popular Mennonite-owned chain of restaurants.
The letter informed of the termination but provided no reason for the decision. All four women claim their letters were similar. In speaking with Mayor Mariano during the public livestream, the women claim they had each been working there for about a year and never had any issues before new management took charge of the restaurant.
The woman claim they were mistreated at work and were unfairly targeted and terminated because of racial prejudice, a serious accusation against any company, especially in contemporary social climate. Breaking Belize News (BBN) contacted Western Dairies for comment, however, none was forthcoming up to time of this publication. The company did indicate it was aware of the situation and drafting a release on the matter.
Mayor Mariano pledged to the women that he would contact the relevant managers at Western Dairies to sort the matter out and ensure that due process is followed. He also said that if the terminations were wrongful, the Town Council would lobby to have the women re-instated, though, some of the women expressed they wouldn’t want to go back to the job regardless.
