Kings Park businessman remanded for firearm possession and refusal of blood sample

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Omar Anhel Avelar, a 31-year-old businessman from Kings Park, finds himself on remand at the Belize Central Prison, accused of possessing a licensed firearm while allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Avelar also faces charges for failing to provide police with a blood specimen upon request.

Appearing unrepresented in Court #6 on Tuesday, Avelar pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, due to the severity of the offenses under Section 16 of the Crimes Control Criminal & Justice Act, the Senior Magistrate explained that she was unable to grant bail. Avelar has been advised to seek bail at the High Court.

The incident leading to Avelar’s arrest occurred in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, 2024. Police Officers Martinez and Pollard were conducting a vehicular checkpoint on New Road in Belize City when they stopped a gold Ford Expedition with a defective headlight. Avelar was identified as the driver, accompanied by another male in the passenger seat.

Upon interaction with Avelar, Officer Martinez detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. A search of the vehicle revealed a 9mm handgun on Avelar’s waist. He was promptly informed of the offense and escorted to the Queen Street Police Station, where the firearm and 18 rounds of ammunition were secured as evidence.

At the station, Avelar was requested to provide a blood specimen, which he refused. Consequently, he now awaits further legal proceedings while on remand.
