By Aaron Humes: The Christmas season will be short for Belize’s cane farmers, as they will be back to work next Friday, December 27.
This season is bedeviled by two major issues: a lengthy drought giving way to major flooding issues in the North; and the discovery of fusarium wilt in fields in Corozal.
Communications and public affairs officer for Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) William Neal indicated that while the factory as per usual wished to start earlier, farmers and farmers’ associations asked for the later date to address these issues.
We will have more on this later on.
