By Aaron Humes: 19-year-old Jamir Cambranes was found dead late Tuesday night, marking the third murder of a Belize City teenager in just 12 days. Cambranes, who lived in the Mesopotamia area, had left his home on King Street around 7 PM.

According to family members, Jamir left home to meet up with individuals he believed were friends. His uncle, Alfonso Noble, suggested, “Now, this is a young man just arrived from work, gets a call but as friends as friends usually do, you are sucked into this vortex of, peer pressure and everything else that is concomitant to that. He received that communication. He went jumped on his bicycle and left somewhere.”

Jamir subsequently sent a tracking signal from his cell phone to his girlfriend, indicating that he was in an area known for gang activity. His mother, Genoveva Noble, expressed her belief that Jamir recognized he was in peril when he took a photo of his location and sent it to her.

His body was discovered hours later, showing signs of severe trauma. “He had bruises all over his face and body as if he had been brutally beaten,” his uncle recounted. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the area around 9:30 PM.

Jamir’s family is left to grapple with unanswered questions and indescribable grief. His uncle pointed out the alarming trend of violence affecting young people in their community, condemning a society that seems apathetic to such tragedies. “This is so wrong. We see it over and over again and it will not stop. There is nothing to stop this. Nothing. And the government is so, so, so paralyzed and so unconcerned and uncaring about what is taking place in this society that it makes it wonder what the hell what is even the purpose of even living now?” he lamented.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding Jamir’s death and have impounded a Chevy Equinox in connection with the case. ASP Stacy Smith, Police Staff Officer, reported that the investigation is underway: “What we have learned so far in the course of this investigation is that Cambranes departed from his residence in Belize City sometime before 8 o’clock pm en route to visit two persons known to him and it was when calls from family members of his went unanswered that a decision was made to track his phone. This decision led them to an area off the Hattieville road where the body of Cambranes was discovered. The scene was processed and I must say that items of useful evidential material were retrieved and we have also trapped the vehicle in question with the help of the fusion center and that vehicle is now impounded and being processed.”

Two persons from Belize City are being sought as police investigations continue.
