By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City food vendor who recently completed an 11-year prison sentence for manslaughter has landed back behind bars—this time over years-old unpaid court fines.
Kevin Michael Jex, appeared before a Magistrate on Tuesday to answer a minor charge of public drinking. Police alleged that on Sunday, November 16, 2025, Jex was seen consuming a Belikin beer on North Front Street. He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor, which carries a $25 fine plus $5 cost of court.
Jex, who once faced a life sentence for murder before his conviction was reduced to manslaughter on appeal, asked the court to grant him self-bail, explaining he had no one to sign for him. The Magistrate agreed and offered bail of $400 plus one surety.
However, Jex was unable to post bail due to outstanding fines dating back to 2013. Court staff informed him that to receive an extension, he would first need to make a substantial payment toward the old debt. When he could not pay, a warrant was issued committing him to the Belize Central Prison to serve time in lieu of the outstanding fines.
Before being escorted out, a visibly frustrated Jex told the court he could not understand how he still owed the judiciary after already spending 11 years behind bars.
