By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cyclist Kent ‘Bob’ Gabourel rode a great cycling criterium finishing fourth in the 40-44 years of age category on Monday morning at the Pan-American Masters Games on a 1.05 kilometre circuit in Cleveland Ohio. Gabourel rode the 29-lap 30.45-kilometre criterium in 41 minutes and 20 seconds (41:20), eight seconds behind winner, American Joshua Friedman, who clocked 41:11. Gabuorel clocked an average speed of 44:20 kilometres per hour. Friedman’s average was 44:36 kph.
All nine riders finished the criterium.
Roque Matus was quite competitive placing fifth in the 50-54 category riding the 29-lap 30.45-kilometre criterium in 41 minutes and 18 seconds (41:18), one second behind winner, Canadian Francois Doyon, who was timed at 41:17. Matus average 44:22 kph. Doyon’s average was 44:25 kph.
Sixteen of 17 riders finished the criterium.
Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph and Robert Liam Stewart were also very competitive finishing ninth place and tenth in the 55-59 category clocking 39 minutes and 59 seconds (39:59). The official results put Joseph at three seconds behind and Stewart at four behind winner, American Tom Weaver, who clocked 39:55. Joseph rode the 27.30-kilometre race at an average speed of 40.97 kph and Stewart at 40.96 kph. Weaver’s average was 41.02 kph.
Thirteen of 14 riders finished the criterium.
On Tuesday, Gabourel, Matus, and Stewart will compete in the Individual Time Trial.
On Wednesday all four will compete in the Road Race.
