By Breaking Belize News Staff: Just seven months after being released from prison for robbery, 32-year-old Karon Santos has found himself back behind bars—this time for stealing a bottle of whisky.

Santos appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #3, where he pleaded guilty to theft for stealing a one-litre bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black Scotch Whisky valued at $136.28, property of James Brodies & Company Ltd. The offense occurred at the company’s store located at Mile 2½ on the Philip Goldson Highway.

Despite asking the court for leniency and requesting a fine instead of jail time, Santos was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. The court took into account his criminal history, including a robbery charge that is still pending trial.

According to police, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, around 9:20 a.m., the general manager of Brodies & Co., reported the matter to police. Woods stated that the head of security had informed him of an incident that occurred the previous day, Monday, February 2, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., involving the theft of a bottle of whisky from the store.

Police investigations revealed that at around 10:30 a.m., a security officer observed a dark-complexioned, slim-built Creole man wearing three-quarter jeans, a black jacket, and black slippers enter the store and proceed to the liquor section. The security guard reportedly saw the man take a one-litre bottle of Johnnie Walker Double Black Scotch Whisky from the shelf and walk out of the store without paying.

The security officer approached the man outside and conducted a search, during which the bottle of whisky—valued at $136.28—was found in his possession. Police were alerted, and the suspect, later identified as Karon Santos, an unemployed man of no fixed address, was detained and taken to the Caribbean Shores Sub-Police Station, where he was charged with theft.

Court records show that on Monday, July 14, 2025, Santos pleaded guilty to robbery involving the theft of a school bag containing clothes, a Social Security card, $300 cash, and a TCL cellphone valued at $150, totaling $450, from a construction worker of Patchakan Village, Corozal.

Although Santos admitted responsibility at the time and told the court he did not use a knife, the then presiding Magistrate, Ludlow Black, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.

Seven months later, Santos is once again serving time—this time over a bottle of whisky.
