By Zoila Palma: The Karst Management Unit (KMU) participated in a two-day training facilitated by the FCD’s, Cultural Heritage Technician, which combined both theoretical (classroom-based) and practical (hands-on field) components.
The theoretical training provided the KMU staff with a comprehensive overview of the Chiquibul cave system, highlighting both past and current findings.
The sessions also focused on a summary of the cultural inventory and archaeological data documented to date.
Discussions also included archaeological data collection standards (site types, artifact identification, site identification), artifact photography, and standardized site recording methods, common errors to avoid during documentation, and the ethical, safety, and legal responsibilities associated with cultural heritage documentation.
The practical, hands-on training emphasized proper field data collection techniques, identification of archaeological sites, and artifact recognition.
Participants were trained in the correct use of the standardized data sheets to ensure accurate, consistent, and detailed recording of artifacts and site information in the field.
“This training strengthened technical capacity and reinforced best practices for cultural heritage documentation, supporting ongoing research, conservation, and management efforts within the Chiquibul National Park,” FCD noted.
