Karate instructor jailed for defying restraining orders, accused of choking ex-girlfriend unconscious

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Karate, Judo, and Yoga instructor Windell Herman Thurton, 28, is behind bars at the Belize Central Prison after being denied bail for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend and repeatedly violating court orders to stay away from her.

Thurton was charged with common assault and breach of protection order after his ex accused him of choking her until she lost consciousness. The incident reportedly occurred around 4:00 a.m. on May 10, 2025, near her home.

Despite a Family Court protection order issued in February 2025—barring Thurton from contacting or approaching her for three years—he allegedly defied that order, leading to his latest arrest. He also previously faced charges of harm and sexual assault in January, with similar restrictions placed on him by the court.

In court, Thurton initially pleaded guilty but denied critical parts of the police report, claiming he “only touched the young lady” and never choked her. Due to the inconsistency in his plea, the Senior Magistrate entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Prosecutors strongly objected to bail, citing Thurton’s history of ignoring court orders. The Senior Magistrate agreed, ruling that his past behavior showed a disregard for legal restrictions and posed a risk to the complainant’s safety.

Thurton argued that he is his mother’s sole provider, gainfully employed at Red Dragon studio on Baymen Avenue, and that his current girlfriend is pregnant. But the court was not convinced.

He has been remanded until October 6, 2025, when his bail status will be reconsidered.
