By Aaron Humes: Ahead of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) Director Daniel Mendez highlighted the vital role of the media in disseminating accurate information and combating misinformation. He announced plans to embed media personnel within NEMO headquarters during emergencies and stressed the need for communication and avoidance of misinformation across diverse platforms, including social media, radio, and television.
The authorities urge citizens, businesses, and communities to review emergency plans, stay informed through official channels such as www.nms.gov.bz and www.nemo.org.bz, and remain vigilant for updates. Sharing false information is an offense, and only official sources should be trusted. A special bulletin for the press was held on Wednesday in Belize City.
The season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, though tropical systems can emerge outside these dates.
This year, meteorologists forecast a normal to above-normal season, with 13 to 19 named storms, including 6 to 10 hurricanes, of which 3 to 5 could be major, Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale or higher. For comparison, an average season typically features 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
While predictions indicate potential activity, they do not specify when or where storms may strike. Belize remains vulnerable, and officials emphasize the importance of ongoing preparedness. The National Meteorological Service (NMS) and NEMO will continue monitoring systems closely, issuing timely alerts as needed, and activating response plans.
Belize is entering the 2025 hurricane season with caution and readiness. Experts call on everyone to prepare now, stay informed, and work together to keep the nation safe against the threat of tropical cyclones.
