By Aaron Humes: Former Government of Belize First Class Clerk June Juliet Belisle, who pleaded guilty to theft after stealing $91,639.58 in 2019 and 2020, was spared prison time with a suspended sentence of two years’ imprisonment and fine of $5,000 in compensation.
High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim concluded sentencing Belisle in the presence of her attorney Ronell Gonzalez, which began on Thursday.
Belisle’s suspended sentence means that she will only go to jail if she gets into any other trouble in the next three years.
Belisle had apologized for her actions, saying she was under financial strain then and has no job now.
The first time offender was accused of stealing almost $100,000 in cash from the Treasury Department by inventing a financial assistance program in Government’s name and enticing several single mothers to enroll. She collected the largest share of the siphoned funds and gave pittances to the others.
