By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Red Dragon Martial Arts Academy Dojo hosted the Judo Belize Federation’s (JBF) 2025 National Championships on May 31st, bringing together the best judokas from Belize City and Orange Walk for an intense competition.
Top Medallists
- Male Seniors (+74 kg): Shyheim Tablada claimed gold, with Leonardo Awayo taking silver.
- Male Seniors (-74 kg): Maurice Savery emerged victorious, securing gold, while Jadan Moguel earned silver.
- Junior Males (+66 kg): Dwayne Flowers grabbed gold, Malachi Garcia won silver, and Benjamin Liang took bronze.
- Junior Males (17 years, -66 kg): Marcello Salam took home gold, Marcus Smith secured silver, and Tyrone Smith earned bronze.
- Females (17 years): Estela Quinteros triumphed with gold, while Guarris Burgos claimed silver.
- Males (12 years, +50 kg): Gabriel Tejada secured gold, while Jin Guild took silver.
- Males (12 years, -50 kg): Austin Roches earned gold, followed by Kodie Tucker (silver) and Nazir Perez (bronze).
- Females (10 years): Kaylee Lord struck gold, while Yura Guild claimed silver.
A Lightning-Fast Victory
One of the most thrilling moments of the tournament came from Austin Roches, who delivered the fastest Ippon of the championships in just 10 seconds—a victory so swift that spectators barely had time to react.
The JBF said the event was a resounding success, celebrating the exceptional talent of Belize’s judo athletes and reinforcing the JBF’s commitment to the growth of the sport in the country. With strong performances, disciplined techniques, and exciting matches, the 2025 JBF National Championships proved that Belizean judo is on the rise.
Key officials overseeing the tournament included JBF President Remus Betancourt, International Judo Federation (IJF) referee from Guatemala Oscar Morales, JBF General Secretary and Tournament Coordinator Leon Guild, Committee Member and Technical Assistant Shyheim Tablada, Statistics Support and Timekeeper Sergio Betancourt, and JBF Treasurer Franz Menzies Jr., who served as the Master of Ceremonies.
