By Zoila Palma: As Belize gears up for Agric 2026, the judging committee commenced the process for the Male, Female, and Junior Farmer of the Year Awards.
The judging committee visited farms from March 10–18, 2026.
This year’s judging team included Willie Chan, Technical Coordinator of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, who served as Team Leader; Martin Lindo, representing the private sector and former Research Technician at the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute; and Fred Roches, Livestock Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries.
The Ministry of Agriculture, through its Extension Department, prepared and submitted profiles of qualified farmers from across the country.
The judging committee then visited and evaluated each farm and farmer competing for these prestigious titles.
Evaluations were conducted using a standardized scoring system provided by the Ministry, with farms assessed based on crops (40 points), livestock (40 points), and farm administration (20 points), for a total of 100 points.
The judging committee commended all participating farmers for their dedication, hard work, and contribution to the agricultural sector.
This year’s theme is “Advancing Smart Agriculture: Building Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Belizean Food System.”
The 2026 National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) will take place from May 1–3, 2026, in Belmopan City.
The opening ceremonies are scheduled for April 30, 2026.
