Judge dismisses case against remand for four months for alleged gun threat

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 28-year-old Belize City man who spent four months behind bars on allegations of gun violence is now a free man after a magistrate dismissed the case due to a lack of evidence.

Anthony Myers, a resident of Trinity Street in the Port Loyola area, walked out of court last Thursday morning after charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and threat of death against him were thrown out.

Myers had been on remand since August 4, 2025, accused of pointing a firearm at a woman and threatening to kill her during an incident on July 31, 2025. He was also charged over an alleged threat on July 3 in which he reportedly told Casimiro, “B***h, yuh wah call police but when I buck yuh, I wah kill yuh.”

Because the accusations involved a firearm, Myers was denied bail at his initial arraignment before Magistrate Ludlow Black, and a later bail application filed in November by attorney Ian Gray was also rejected on grounds that the alleged victim had been traumatized.

However, during the trial, the court determined that police conducted no proper investigation before charging Myers, despite the serious nature of the offense. The court noted that:

  • No firearm search was conducted at Myers’ home
  • A second woman present was never questioned
  • The complainant was not challenged on her claim that Myers had a gun
  • No evidence corroborated her allegations

Both the complainant and the un-interviewed witness are sisters, the court was told.

With zero supporting evidence and no investigative follow-up, the magistrate ruled that the charge should never have been filed and dismissed the case, allowing Myers to walk free.

Outside the courtroom, Myers said he was simply happy to go home after months behind bars for a charge that “shouldn’t never reach court.”
