By Aaron Humes: According to Channel 7 News, Belize’s most famous prisoner has defied a seeming gag order to plead his case once more.
Joseph Budna sent a WhatsApp picture of a handwritten note on Monday, accusing the Belize Embassy in Guatemala of “asking the prison authorities or Guatemalan authorities not to allow me to communicate and they know why…instead of assisting – they are plotting against me and then fool the Belizean people…the GOB is behind all this and continues to plot with Guatemalan authorities to keep me incommunicado.” The Embassy has not commented.
Budna said his injuries are still not healed, and he urges the government to “act now in my return process and to hold each and every player responsible for what they did to me”.
And while it may not reach the heights of Martin Luther King’s letter from Birmingham jail, the maxim King established remains true that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ Acting Commissioner Bart Jones, a trained attorney, kept his comments concise on Monday when questioned about the investigative report submitted today to Prime Minister John Briceno.
After confirming that he would see the report after it was handed in, he contended that he still has yet to review the surveillance video from buildings surrounding the site of the alleged abduction, preferring not to compromise the integrity of the investigation: “It is not because of any disinterest, but the investigation is ongoing and so I will allow that to go through…As I have said, all of that will in due time will be addressed…A lot of things that might be amazing to you or other persons, but this is how I chose to do it, my way.”
