Jorge Perugorría receives Cuba’s 2024 National Film Award

One of my favs, Cuban actor, director, and visual artist Jorge Perugorría received the 2024 National Film Award this Saturday in recognition of his artistic career, reported the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC). Euro.ESEuro reports:

The actor and director Jorge Perugorría, known as “Pichy”, won the 2024 National Film Award todayreported the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) on its Facebook profile.

The jury was made up of the writer Miguel Barnet, as president, the documentary filmmaker Héctor Veitía, the actress Eslinda Núñez, the director Lourdes de los Santos and the makeup artist and winner of the 2023 award Magaly Pompa. This afternoon, the Princes’ Hall of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the five members chose from the 20 nominations coming from cultural institutions, creative organizations legally registered in the registry of associations and personalities who have received the National Film Award.

“After analyzing the proposals and recognizing the value of all the candidates, the national and international work of the Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría and his multiple nominations and awards in all latitudes were highlighted,” highlighted the jury’s minutes, which disdained the candidacy of the Assembly of Cuban Filmmakers (ACC), which, at the beginning of March, after an intense union vote, nominated the actor Luis Alberto García.

Perugorría is known, above all, for his leading role in Strawberry and Chocolate, by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío, which opened the doors to cinema in Latin America and Europe. He has starred, among others, Waiting List and The Horn of Plenty by Juan Carlos Tabío, Honey for Oshún and Cuba Neighborhood by Humberto Solás, A Rose from France, by Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón and The Wall of Words, by Fernando Pérez. He also played detective Mario Conde, main character in Leonardo Padura’s novels, in the four-film series Four seasons in Havana by Féliz Viscarret.

Likewise, Perugorría He has directed films such as Fátima or the Fraternity Park, Affinities and For Sale. In addition to being an actor and director, he is also a painter and in November 2015 he inaugurated the Taller Gorría Gallery, a cultural project and art gallery located in the San Isidro neighborhood, in Old Havana.

The members of the jury  highlighted the contribution of Perugorría “to the development of national culture, of which he is an indisputable defender. He is one of the most visible faces of his generation and has set a standard in the interpretation of the most diverse characters he has faced.”
