By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize City car dealer Jordan Gerald Morey, 31, has been convicted of obtaining property by deception after admitting he swindled a woman out of $6,700 for a vehicle he never delivered.
Appearing unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black in Court #4, Morey pleaded guilty to the charge after requesting a sentencing indication. He claimed his mother had passed away the night before while he was in lockup, leaving his 16-year-old sister alone at home. With no one to bail him, he sought a non-custodial sentence.
The court heard that between September and December 2024, Morey took a total of $6,700 from 23-year-old Natesha Flores under the pretense of importing a Mazda Tribute from the USA. The payments were made both in cash and via online transfers. Flores reported the matter to police after months of excuses and no vehicle delivery.
Magistrate Black considered Morey’s early guilty plea, which saved the court time. However, the court also took note of aggravating factors, including Morey’s prior conviction and a troubling pattern of similar allegations — five charges in total, with four struck out and one resulting in conviction.
Morey was fined $2,500 plus a $5 court cost, payable by August 29, 2025. Failure to pay will result in one year of imprisonment.
