The 8th International Festival of Culture in Benque Viejo del Carmen is scheduled to take place on March 28-30, 2025 at Centennial Park in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The festival has its origins in 2004 when Benque Viejo celebrated its centennial as a municipal town. Since then, the festival has been celebrated every two years, with a period of inactivity due to the pandemic.
The festival will encompass the different forms of artistic expressions including story-telling, theatre, dance, and music with visiting groups including Teatro La Siembra (Honduras), sax musician Luis F. López (Guatemala), Marimbística (Mexico), K’iinich Ajau Poktapok, Golden Paws, the Belize Dance Company, and Loreto Pelayo Jazz Quartet (Belize). Participants will also feature local groups like Los Hijos del West, the Benque Dance Company, and Ritmo Succotzeño. An art, culture, and trade expo has been scheduled during the day on March 30.
The 8th International Festival of Culture kicked ff with a poetry recital and photographic competition under the festival’s theme IMAGINE, INNOVATE, RECREATE on Friday, 14th March, 2025. Guest poet for the occasion was Felene Cayetano, president of the Belize Book Industry Association.
The festival is aimed at providing a forum for local artistry, as well as a medium for cultural exchange and exposure. Since its inception, the festival has depended highly on local patronage. In this way, people of all ages are able to have access to the events, free of cost.
The National Institute of Culture & History (NICH) has stepped up as prime sponsor of the event. which also has the support of the private sector through the sale of advertisement.
