By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Former Belmopan area representative John Saldivar has broken his silence with a deeply personal reflection titled “Quo Vadis, John,” recounting over 40 years in Belizean politics and his ongoing uncertainty about the future.
Saldivar recalled his political beginnings in 1985, when he attended his first United Democratic Party (UDP) meeting at the home of Melvin Hulse Sr., marking the start of what he called “an illustrious political career that would span five decades.”
“Politics is about service,” Saldivar wrote, saying his motivation was always to help people through education, sports, housing, and medical support. He credited the People’s United Party (PUP) government for introducing a constituency fund that allows representatives to serve their communities more effectively.
Reflecting on the scandals that derailed his career, Saldivar said his downfall was not corruption, but political rivalry. “It has to be the most ridiculous thing for a politician to be held culpable for the activities of persons who have donated to his political efforts,” he said.
He hinted at the possibility of re-entering public life, either to “hold the party steady from within” or to make “independent contributions” to national dialogue, possibly through a late-night talk show, signing off with the phrase, “Here’s Johnny.”
