By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 24-year-old Ladyville resident has been arraigned and remanded in connection with the 2023 murder of James Kelvin Bainton, who was fatally shot at the Ladyville Sports Complex.

John Carlos Quilter, an unemployed resident of #181 Parakeet Street, Ladyville, appeared unrepresented on Friday afternoon before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Quilter was read a single charge of murder. No plea was taken, and due to the nature of the offence, bail was denied. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 16, 2025.

Bainton, 21, a Belize labourer of Perez Road, Ladyville, was shot on the night of May 4, 2023. Police say that around 9:59 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at the Ladyville Sports Complex, where they found a slim, fair-complexioned male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to the Price Barracks Medical Centre, where he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. He was pronounced dead at 12:49 a.m. on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Initial investigations revealed that about 9:45 p.m., Bainton was at the sports complex with his brothers, Elvis Bainton, Daniel Robinson, and Ashton Robinson, when they became involved in an altercation with several other male persons. After the dispute, Bainton and his brothers were walking toward Seagull Street when Tyler Smith allegedly approached from the basketball court side and fired a single shot in Bainton’s direction, causing his fatal injury.

Police say that during the investigation, multiple witness statements were recorded, the scene was processed by Scenes of Crime personnel, and photographs were taken. Investigators allege that a witness saw Quilter hand a firearm to Tyler Smith, who then ran toward Bainton and fired the fatal shot.

On Friday, January 9, 2026, nearly two years and eight months after the incident, Quilter was arrested and charged with murder. Tyler Smith is said to have fled the country and is believed to be residing in the United States.
