By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The post mortem examination conducted on Wednesday has confirmed the cause of death for 35-year-old Joel Sierra, the Santa Elena man at the center of Saturday’s chaotic shooting incident.
According to police, the official cause of death was certified as acute respiratory failure due to acute pulmonary edema, pending toxicology results. In simpler terms, Sierra reportedly died after fluid accumulated in his lungs, preventing him from breathing properly.
Officials say toxicology tests are still pending and are expected to determine whether prohibited substances may have contributed to his death. Investigators suspect Sierra may have been under the influence when he allegedly began firing a gun indiscriminately during the frightening incident on Saturday.
The investigation remains ongoing.
