By Aaron Humes: 27-year-old Jimmy Estuardo Rojas, a maintenance worker with the Belize City Council and resident of Peter Seco Street, Belize City, has been arraigned for the murder of Jose Matus on January 12 on Singh Street and Rio Grande Crescent, Fabers Road Extension.
Rojas and another still at large are accused of gunning down Matus, 48, alias “El Wapo”, as he was taking off after dropping off two sisters aged 20 and 16. They are alleged to have climbed out of a van and opened fire on Matus in the driver’s seat before fleeing toward Watermelon Street.
No plea was taken and Rojas was remanded without bail until April 19, 2024.
He was also charged with a separate offense of common assault on a woman on July 29, 2023. He pleaded not guilty to this charge and was remanded without bail until March 12 when he re-appears in court on this charge.
