Jimmy Cliff, whose music was loved by many in Belize, dies at 81

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Jimmy Cliff, one of the world’s most influential reggae artists and a musician deeply loved by many Belizeans, has died at the age of 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, confirmed that he passed away after suffering a seizure followed by pneumonia. Her statement, also signed by their children, expressed gratitude to fans and supporters who stood by the legendary singer throughout his remarkable career.

Cliff, born James Chambers in 1944, rose from humble beginnings in St. James, Jamaica, to become one of the defining voices of reggae music. His uplifting anthems, including “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and “Many Rivers To Cross”, helped to carry the sound of Jamaica across the globe. In Belize, his music continues to be part of daily life, played at cultural events, family gatherings, and celebrations across the country.

His starring role as Ivan Martin in the 1972 film The Harder They Come introduced reggae to American audiences and cemented his place in cinematic and musical history. The soundtrack is widely regarded as one of the greatest reggae albums ever recorded.

Cliff’s career spanned more than six decades, earning him international acclaim, Grammy Awards, the Jamaican Order of Merit, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His songs of struggle, hope, and empowerment resonated deeply with Caribbean people, Belize included, and inspired generations of musicians.

He continued performing well into his later years, sharing his music with new audiences at festivals worldwide. Though he received many honors, Cliff often said the greatest reward was hearing how his music changed people’s lives.

His death marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on in every reggae rhythm that echoes across Belize and the Caribbean.
