By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old construction worker from Independence Village has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment for a murder and attempted murder arising from a late-night shooting in Bella Vista Village, Toledo District, more than four months ago.
Jerdell Benjamin King was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning, where he appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2. At 11:28 a.m., King was read two indictable charges—murder and attempted murder—in connection with the September 6, 2025 attack that claimed the life of 20-year-old Nergin Ceron and left Ceron’s common-law wife, Nickey Feliciana Logan, injured.
The court explained to King that the offenses are indictable and can only be tried at the High Court; as such, no plea was taken. King was remanded into custody until March 13, 2026, and was informed that his next appearance will be in the Punta Gorda Magistrate’s Court. Court records further showed that King owes two outstanding traffic fines of $155 and $105 for no insurance. The sitting magistrate ordered that warrants be issued so the fines may be served while he is in custody.
According to police, the shooting occurred between 10:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, and 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025. Officers from the Bella Vista Police Station responded to reports of gunfire at an unpainted house on Fourth Street, elevated about three feet off the ground. Investigators learned that Ceron was asleep in bed with his common-law wife and their infant daughter when an armed intruder forced entry through the locked back door and opened fire inside the bedroom.
Ceron sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. His common-law wife was also shot but survived. Their infant child was not physically harmed. After the shooting, witnesses reported hearing a motorcycle leaving the area. Logan was transported first to the Independence Polyclinic and later to the Dangriga Hospital for treatment.
Scenes of Crime technicians processed the scene and recovered multiple expended 9mm shells. Ceron’s body was later transported to the Southern Regional Hospital morgue. Police said their investigation included the recording of witness statements.
On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, police detained King when he reported to sign in at the Independence Police Station, as required under a Supreme Court bail for an unrelated alleged robbery. While in custody, King was interviewed and the case file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Later that day, the DPP issued directives instructing police to charge King with murder and attempted murder.
