By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025 Annual Belize Tourism Board (BTB) September Criterium lit up Albert and Regent Streets in Belize City on Sunday, September 14, 2025, with fierce competition and national pride, as Belize’s top cyclists battled for supremacy in the Open Elite and Masters categories. With the Cycling Federation of Belize and BTB leading the charge, the event delivered high drama and standout performances.
Open Elite: Briceno Breaks Through
Jaylen Briceño of G-Flow Cycling Club surged to a commanding 1st place, earning the top prize of $1500 and a trophy, marking a defining moment in his career. Teammate Derrick Chavarria followed in 2nd, while Oscar Quiroz of Valvoline Cycling Club secured 3rd, continuing his consistent podium presence.
Shawn Codd of PMA Racing claimed 4th place. The top five was rounded out by Goran Gabourdel of A. Mahler Digi Alliance. Other notable finishers included Joslyn Chavarria Jr. (6th), Kenyon Stanford (7th), Jyven Gonzalez (8th), Carlton Robinson (9th), and Giovanni Lovell (10th), all contributing to a tightly contested top ten.
Masters Division: Gabourel Leads the Pack
In the Masters category, Kent Bob Gabourel of SPD Cycling Team took 1st place, followed by Angel Tzib (unattached) in 2nd, and Byron Pope (A. Mahler Digi Alliance) in 3rd, proving that experience and endurance remain a powerful combination.
Lap Prizes: Chavarria’s Relentless Rhythm
While Briceño claimed the overall win, Derrick Chavarria dominated the lap prizes, winning five of 12 laps. Qurioz took four laps and Briceño three.
A Celebration of Belizean Cycling
With strong showings from G-Flow, Valvoline, PMA, SPD, and A. Mahler Digi Alliance, the event reaffirmed Belize’s vibrant cycling culture.
