On the artist (from Firetti Contemporary): Cuban-Syrian artist Jason Seife delves into the profound exploration of cultural heritage by examining the mysterious essence embedded in Arab World tapestries. Similar to oral traditions, these intricately woven carpets serve as vessels carrying wisdom, knowledge, and timeless narratives, encapsulating unspoken or folkloric sentiments that have unfolded in communal Majlis gatherings. With this work, Seife communicates a visual narrative shedding light on a conflict related to the transmission of oral culture across generations. Through this, he strives to capture a sense of preservation for his interpretation of heritage. Siefe’s work grapples with the concept of preserving and adapting to the influence of modernity on his cultural history. Consequently, this juxtaposition creates a visually harmonious synergy, reflecting the tension between conservation and the evolving impact of contemporary influences.
Overview: The intricate patterns of traditional Persian carpets and arabesques formed lasting childhood memories for Seife who was born to immigrant parents from Syria and Cuba. Seife meticulously hand paints his own original designs. Despite being inspired by tradition, he makes use of unconventional materials such as reinforced concrete, allowing his work to be appreciated by broader audiences. Yet, the historical significance behind the work remains particularly important to Seife who admires the ability of traditional weavers to incorporate hidden meaning in their designs. These ancient designs were able to link to specific cultural identities, geographies and communities. Seife has followed in these footsteps, creating his own concealed language. The colours and patterns he uses are reflections of his own mood, relating to his emotional state of mind.
Seife’s success spans exhibitions nationally and internationally, including a special project with The Bronx and Brooklyn Museums, where his work was projected on their facades on a grand scale.
