Japan funds BZ$28 million for reconstruction of the swing bridge

By Zoila Palma:  On December 17, 2025, the Governments of Japan and Belize signed an Exchange of Notes (E/N) and a Grant Agreement (G/A) for the Project for the Reconstruction of the Swing Bridge in Belize City, reaffirming the strong friendship between the two nations.

The Exchange of Notes was signed by Ambassador Ryosuke Yamakura of the Embassy of Japan in Belize and Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Education, Culture, Science and Technology, on behalf of the Government of Belize.

The E/N paved the way for the Grant Agreement (G/A), which was signed in the amount of two billion one hundred and seventy-one million Japanese Yen (¥2,171,000,000), approximately twenty-eight million Belize Dollars (BZ$28,000,000).

The Grant Agreement was signed by Hiromi Nai, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) El Salvador Office, and Prime Minister John Briceño.

In his remarks, Ambassador Yamakura underscored Japan’s continued commitment to supporting sustainable development in Belize, emphasizing the importance of strengthening resilience, improving livelihoods, and fostering national growth.
