By Breaking Belize News Staff: The murder trial of Jamie Caesar Young, accused of killing 30-year-old Damion Dominique Baptist during a deadly highway pursuit in 2024, has been postponed after Young’s attorney fell ill.
Young appeared before Justice Candace Nanton in the High Court on Monday, when his trial had been scheduled to begin. However, the matter could not proceed because his attorney, Dr. Lynden Jones, was unable to attend due to illness.
The case was consequently adjourned to October 13, 2026.
Young is accused of murdering Baptist, a former Belize Defence Force soldier and bus driver from Burrell Boom Village, on March 16, 2024.
According to police allegations, Baptist was driving a red Ford Fusion along the Philip Goldson Highway with Laneedrah Dawson when they were allegedly pursued by Young, Dawson’s former boyfriend.
Police say the confrontation began near the HRCU housing area, where Young allegedly attempted to collide with Baptist’s vehicle before pointing a firearm in their direction.
Investigators allege that Young then followed the pair in a grey Wingle pickup and fired at their vehicle near Tubal Training School, shattering a passenger-side window.
The chase allegedly continued toward Ladyville, where police say Young again pulled alongside the Ford Fusion near Our Lady of the Way RC School between Miles 8 and 9 and fired into the vehicle.
Baptist was struck in the head, lost control of the car and crashed into a lamp post. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Young later surrendered to police and was formally charged with Baptist’s murder as well as aggravated assault upon Dawson.
The case has since moved through the High Court’s pre-trial process. In May, BBN reported that prosecutors intend to rely on surveillance footage, photographs and material allegedly extracted from a phone, while Young’s defence indicated that it intends to call an alibi witness. Trial dates had been scheduled for October 5 through October 13.
Young remains accused and has not been convicted of the offences.
