By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-two-year-old Jamal Maurice Brackett was provided with disclosure this week in the murder case for which he remains on remand, as the matter advances toward a Preliminary Inquiry.

Brackett, a resident of May Flower Street, appeared on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, before a magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was handed 35 pages of disclosure and four DVDs in connection with the case. His matter has been adjourned to January 12, 2026, the date set for the Preliminary Inquiry.

Brackett was initially arraigned on Monday, May 19, 2025, on a charge of murder in the shooting death of Carlos Enriquez Avelar, which occurred on Labour Day, May 1, 2025, near the corner of Coney Drive and Sunrise Avenueon the north side of Belize City.

According to police reports, around 8:15 p.m. on May 1, officers from the Crimes Investigation Branch (Northside) responded to reports of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of Avelar, a 61-year-old mason of the Belama area, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Investigations revealed that just minutes earlier, at about 8:09 p.m., Avelar was walking along Coney Drive in the direction of Body 2000 when he was approached by two men on a motorcycle. One of the men reportedly pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at Avelar before both assailants fled along Sunrise Avenue.

The scene was processed by a Scenes of Crime technician, who recovered expended casings and blood swabs. Avelar’s body was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital morgue, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:29 p.m.

Brackett remains in custody as the case proceeds toward its next stage in January.
