Jamaica’s Ernie Smith, smooth reggae singer-songwriter, dead at 80

By Aaron Humes: The wife of legendary Jamaican reggae singer-songwriter Ernie Smith has confirmed his passing on Thursday, April 16 at the age of 80, the St Kitts and Nevis Times reports.

Claudette Bailey-Smith, in an emotional tribute shared on Facebook, painted a deeply personal portrait of a man who was not only a regional icon but also a devoted husband and cherished companion. “With a heart shattered by loss, yet overflowing with love and gratitude, I want to thank each and every person who prayed for my beloved husband, Ernie Smith,” she wrote.

“Ernie was not only my husband, he was the love of my life, my best friend, my safe place, my laughter, and my greatest blessing… To the world, he was a legend whose music touched generations. To me, he was everything.”

According to reports, the beloved music icon suffered two cardiac incidents while receiving treatment at the University of Miami Hospital, where he ultimately passed away, bringing an end to a remarkable life that helped shape the sound and soul of Caribbean music.

Smith was revered for his smooth vocals, poetic storytelling, and socially conscious lyrics; his music transcended borders, touching hearts across generations and earning him a place among Jamaica’s most cherished cultural ambassadors.
