By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Jamaican national has avoided immediate immigration charges after being found in possession of marijuana slightly above the legal threshold.
Thirty-six-year-old Taphirah George Davis, a construction worker who has been living in Belize, was fined in court after police discovered 12 grams of marijuana on his person—just two grams over the amount permitted for personal possession.
Police reports state that on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, officers from the Support Team and Special Branch were on patrol along Caesar Ridge Road when they observed Davis, described as about 5’10” tall and wearing an orange polo shirt with faded three-quarter pants. A search was conducted around 11:00 a.m., leading to the discovery of a plastic bag containing suspected cannabis in his front pants pocket, along with two additional small transparent bags found in a brown sling bag. The substance was weighed in Davis’s presence and totaled 12 grams.
Following his detention, immigration officials confirmed through his passport that Davis is a Jamaican national with no legal status in Belize. Despite this, the Belize Immigration Department opted not to immediately levy immigration charges.
In court, Davis pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled drug, though he claimed the marijuana was not found on him and alleged it had been on a table nearby. The court nevertheless accepted his guilty plea and imposed a $75 fine plus $5 court costs, to be paid by January 31, 2026, or face one week’s imprisonment.
When questioned about his immigration status, Davis told the court that his common-law wife—who is pregnant with their child—had previously applied for an extension on his behalf but failed to follow up. He indicated plans to marry as soon as possible to regularize his status, saying he had delayed marriage until after the birth but now intends to proceed urgently.
The Chief Magistrate noted that Davis has been given another opportunity to legalize his stay in the country. He was allowed to leave the court after pleading guilty, having narrowly avoided both jail time and immediate immigration action in Belize City.
