By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old Jamaican national was fined $605 after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute that reportedly began after he logged her out of her WhatsApp account without permission.
Jerome Murray, a construction worker living in Belize, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of common assault upon his wife.
The incident occurred on Easter Monday, April 6, 2026.
Despite Murray’s wife being outside the courtroom and expressing a desire to withdraw the matter, Murray proceeded to plead guilty when the charge was read.
In court, Murray openly admitted wrongdoing, telling the magistrate: “Meh nah wah lie to yuh, me wrong cause me did put meh hand on her.”
For his guilty plea, the court imposed a non-custodial fine of $600 plus $5 in court costs. He was given until June 30, 2026 to pay, in default of which he will serve three months imprisonment.
According to the facts, Murray’s wife reported to police that around 5:25 p.m. she was at a neighbour’s house seeking assistance when she realized someone had logged her out of her WhatsApp account from home.
When she returned home and questioned her son, he reportedly told her it was Murray who had accessed the account.
She then confronted her husband and asked why he had done it. During the argument, she reportedly pushed him in the face, after which Murray allegedly grabbed an object and slapped her in the face.
Police said two of Murray’s friends intervened before officers were called to the scene, and he was subsequently escorted to the police station.
Murray told the court that he and his wife have been married for one year and six months, adding that it was the first time he had ever been involved in a matter of this nature.
