By Breaking Belize News Staff: A domestic dispute involving a love triangle landed 60-year-old Carl Alexander Wellington in Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he was fined $1,110 after pleading guilty to a charge of damage to property.
Wellington, a Jamaican-Belizean who has lived in Belize for over 20 years, admitted to breaking a $350 Redmi 10 Pro phone belonging to the current boyfriend of the mother of his child.
The incident occurred on November 27, 2024, at an apartment on the second floor of a Belize City residence. According to Wellington, tensions escalated when he found the new boyfriend at the apartment, which he rents for his girlfriend and their child. He claimed that the man and his girlfriend attacked him during an argument over a television and locked him in the bedroom.
Wellington admitted to taking two phones during the altercation but said the damage to the new man’s phone was accidental, occurring as he fled the apartment to avoid further conflict. He later returned both phones but by then, the new boyfriend had already filed a police report.
In court, Wellington expressed remorse, stating he never intended to break the phone and only wanted to see his child. Despite his explanation, Magistrate Joy Malcolm fined him $750 for the property damage, plus a $5 court fee, and ordered $350 in compensation to Vasquez. He has until January 31, 2025, to pay the fines or face up to six months in prison.
