By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): In western Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa has devastated one of the island’s largest egg farms, raising fears of a nationwide food shortage.

The storm, packing 185-mph winds, tore through St. Elizabeth parish on Tuesday, an area known as Jamaica’s “breadbasket.” Despite being built to withstand 150-mph winds, Osbourne Brumley’s multimillion-dollar egg farm collapsed under Melissa’s force, killing thousands of chickens and destroying key equipment.

Brumley, 69, said his uninsured J$540-million (US$3.37-million) investment is now in ruins. His two farms, including another in Springfield, once produced about 75,000 eggs daily, supplying more than 200 supermarkets and 14 hotels across six parishes.

“There’s no other egg farm in Jamaica the size of mine,” Brumley said. “They’re gonna be in trouble.”

Officials fear that the damage will trigger a massive egg shortage, adding to existing food challenges following Hurricane Beryl last year, which had already strained supplies of vegetables and livestock.

Jamaica’s Agriculture Minister Floyd Green said Melissa’s impact will have “a crippling effect” on the country’s agricultural sector. The government plans to form a disaster-recovery task force to assess the damage and boost production in less-affected parishes.

Green noted that recovery will take time but expressed optimism: “Once you provide farmers with opportunity and make it easy for them to start again, they will.”
