Jaimie Young Jr. to call alibi witness as trial progresses in trial for 2024 Damion Baptist murder

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jaimie Caesar Young Jr., the man accused of murdering BDF soldier Damion Dominique Baptist, remains on remand as his murder case continues through the pre-trial stage in the High Court.

Young Jr. appeared before Justice Candace Nanton on Friday alongside his attorney, Dr. Lynden Jones, for another pre-trial hearing in connection with the March 2024 shooting death of Baptist.

During the hearing, Crown Counsel Robert Lord informed the court that the prosecution intends to rely on video footage, pictures, and recordings allegedly extracted from a phone, including surveillance footage said to capture the shooting incident near a supermarket along the Philip Goldson Highway.

However, Dr. Jones told the court that the defense had only received photographs and not the video recordings being referenced by the Crown.

The defense attorney also revealed that Young Jr. intends to call an alibi witness in the case but requested additional time to provide details on the witness or witnesses. Justice Nanton ordered that the particulars of the alibi witness be submitted to the court by June 1, 2026.

The matter was adjourned to September 18, 2026, for continuation of the pre-trial hearing, while trial dates have been set for October 5 through October 13, 2026.

Young Jr. is accused of the murder of 30-year-old Damion Dominique Baptist, a bus driver and BDF soldier from Burrell Boom Village, who was fatally shot on March 16, 2024.

Police allege that Baptist was driving along the Philip Goldson Highway with a teacher when they were pursued by the woman’s ex-boyfriend, identified as Young Jr. Investigators say the confrontation escalated into a deadly chase and shooting near Ladyville RC School, where Baptist was shot in the head, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a lamp post.

Baptist was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
