By Rubén Morales Iglesias: For the second straight year, Jahzara Pascual stood at the center of the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) basketball spotlight, earning Most Valuable Player honours after leading Bishop Martin High School to the 2025 National Championship.

Pascual won the MVP award last year as a reinforcement with San Pedro High School, when they captured the 2024 title. This year, she repeated the feat with her own school, Bishop Martin, scoring 18 points in the semifinal against Wesley College and 19 in the 48–20 championship win over Georgetown Technical High School Egrets.

Her performance was amplified by a strong supporting cast. Former nationals MVP Aysha Acosta, a San Pedro High student who reinforced Bishop Martin this year, contributed 11 points in the final. Acosta had herself been MVP in 2023 while reinforcing King’s College. In effect, this was payback time: Pascual had reinforced San Pedro last year, and now Bishop Martin benefited from San Pedro’s help through Acosta.

The NSSSA rules allow regional champions to recruit up to three players from other schools in their zones for the national tournament, a policy that has shaped the balance of power in recent years.

Jiselle Alvarado and Richrin Diaz added 8 and 6 points respectively, ensuring Bishop Martin’s dominance and giving Pascual the freedom to shine once again.

The Egrets, led by Destiny Thomas (8 pts) and Shaney Meighan (7 pts), struggled to keep pace. Wesley College rebounded from their semifinal loss to claim third place with a 44–17 win over Belmopan Methodist, powered by Jeniyah Welch’s 20 points.

NSSSA president Francis Pascual presented the MVP award to Jahzara, recognizing her rare achievement of winning back‑to‑back MVP titles with two different Northern schools — a feat that reflects both her talent and the region’s basketball strength.
