By Breaking Belize News Staff: A jaguar that was struck and killed along the Burrell Boom Road last night has been safely recovered by the Belize Tapir Project in collaboration with the Belize Forest Department and The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.
According to an official update from the Belize Tapir Project, the animal’s carcass was secured after a Good Samaritan stayed at the scene until authorities arrived. The team extended their appreciation to the Burrell Boom Police for assisting in safeguarding the site.
While early indications suggest that the jaguar was hit by a vehicle, experts have confirmed that a full necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. The team also intends to collect morphometric data from the animal to support ongoing wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts across Belize.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution on rural highways, especially at night, as wildlife continues to move across forested areas.
