By Aaron Humes: The International Women in Conservation (IWIC) has proudly presented its first-ever Women in Conservation Award to Jacinta Usher, Campaign and Policy Director at Oceana, in recognition of her exceptional leadership, advocacy, and impact within Belize’s environmental sector.
Jacinta’s career has been marked by her tireless efforts to protect and preserve Belize’s marine environment. Since joining Oceana in 2016, she has championed community-driven advocacy across the country, raising national awareness about the risks associated with offshore oil exploration and harmful fishing practices. Her work played a pivotal role in the government’s decision to enact a moratorium on offshore oil exploration in 2017, a significant victory for environmental protection.

Usher’s ability to merge policy expertise with her passion for protecting Belize’s blue spaces has made her a powerful voice for ocean conservation. Her grassroots organizing and widespread public support have been instrumental in inspiring lasting change. At the core of her work is a simple belief: environmental issues are ultimately people issues.
In addition to Usher, IWIC also recognized two other outstanding nominees for their remarkable contributions to conservation: Roxana Lemus Orellana, lead zoo keeper, and Veronica Tun, Dangriga fisher. Their dedication and leadership continue to elevate women’s voices within Belize’s conservation movement.

The IWIC award committee congratulates Jacinta Usher on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates all women working tirelessly to protect Belize’s natural resources. Jacinta’s achievement is a testament to the impact that dedicated individuals can have on environmental conservation and the importance of empowering women in this field.
